Medicare - Ready to Enroll?

If you are receiving social security benefits, you will automatically be enrolled in both Medicare Part A and B effective on the 1st of the month you turn 65. The Medicare ID card will arrive in the mail approximately 100 days before your Medicare effective date so be on the lookout. If not, then you pick the time you want Medicare coverage to begin and sign up using either of the following ways:

  1. Make an appointment at your local Social Security office. To locate the office closest to you, please use the following link: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp

  2. Enroll in Medicare on-line. https://www.ssa.gov It’s so easy! You’ll need your name, social security number, date of birth and gender.
    1. After arriving at the home page of ssa.gov, across the top ribbon, click on Medicare.
    2. A drop-down box will emerge. Select Sign Up For Medicare.
    3. A new page is opened. Scroll down to the greyed area labelled Sign Up for Medicare and select Apply Online (blue button).
    4. Another page is opened. Click the box in front of: “I understand and agree to the above statements”. Click Next at the bottom of the page.
    5. Again, another page is opened. Under Apply & Complete, you’ll see the following: After signing into your “my Social Security” account, applying for
    6. Retirement/Medicare may take between 10 to 30 minutes to complete depending on your situation. You can save your application as you go, so you can take a break at any time. Select “Start A New Application”. You’ll want to make sure you are signing up for both Medicare Parts A and B.
    7. Happy hunting!

 

You will be able to do either option as long as it is within 90 days of when you want the Medicare coverage to begin. For example, if you want the coverage to begin on September 1, 2025, then you will be able to enroll beginning in June.
